Produced between 1961 and 1964, the Class 52 were built as a collaboration between Swindon Works (who built 30 units) and Crewe Works (who built 44 units) and were a stable part of mainline traction on the Western Region of British Railways. These locomotives were used right up to the late 1970's when then were withdrawn from services. A few locomotives were saved by preservation groups where they were overhauled and put into service.
