The LMS ‘Porthole’ coaches were built after Nationalisation to designs that had been drawn up by the LMS at Derby in 1947. They were similar to Stanier’s Period 3 stock but had circular toilet windows which gave rise to the ‘Porthole’ nickname. They were built at Derby and Wolverton as well as by Metropolitan-Cammell. Production was halted when the BR Mk1 coaches started to be built.
