In late 1950, the Labour Government had directed British Rail to reduce its consumption of coal and with the Franco and Crosti boiler being claimed to yield fuel savings of 20%, it was decided to produce a Franco-Crosti boilered version of the already highly efficient Standard 9F 2-10-0. On May 18, 1955 the first of ten Crosti 9Fs entered service, but the cost savings were not as great as anticipated and between September 1959 and July 1962 the ten locomotives were converted back into a standard boiler configuration.
